Dynamic Coherence (Dynamická koherence, DK)

A state and process in which the parts of a system become aligned, allowing the whole to function with minimal resistance while retaining its capacity to regulate.

Dynamic Coherence is a state and process in which the parts of a system become aligned, allowing the whole to function with minimal resistance while retaining its capacity to regulate.

It is neither stillness nor performance.
It is a living balance that makes it possible to:

  • move smoothly between rest, activity and recovery
  • respond without inner struggle
  • remain stable as conditions change

A loss of Dynamic Coherence is expressed not simply as a “bad feeling”, but as a narrowing of the system’s regulatory options.

DK in plain language

Most people know the state in which:

  • the body is tense even though “nothing is happening”
  • breathing becomes shorter and faster for no apparent reason
  • the mind knows everything is fine, but the body behaves as if it were not

This is neither weakness nor, by itself, a psychological problem.
It is an autonomic defensive response.

When the system perceives uncertainty or unresolved meaning, it switches into a protective mode.

Within DK, this transition is called:

⚠️ VAO — meaning-triggered defence activation

A state in which the autonomic nervous system is activated not by a direct threat, but by the unclear or unresolved meaning of a situation.

In a VAO state:

  • the body contracts
  • regulatory capacity narrows
  • subtle signals become inaccessible
ℹ️ Important

At that point, Dynamic Coherence is not restored by trying to be calm.
On the contrary, the effort itself often increases the pressure.

Coherence returns when:

  • the meaning of the situation is no longer unclear
  • the body receives a signal of safety
  • the nervous system is once again able to regulate

At that moment:

  • the breath lengthens spontaneously
  • the voice and throat relax
  • attention broadens

Not because we are controlling it.
But because the system no longer needs to maintain its defence.

Summary

In plain language

When the body remains defensive, it is not your fault. It means that something remains unresolved at the level of meaning.

Technical summary

Dynamic Coherence depends on access to vagal regulation, which is restricted by open meaning loops (OVS) and restored when they are closed (UVS).

Abbreviations used on this page

DK
Dynamic Coherence
The process and state of aligning parts of a system over time while preserving regulatory flexibility.
DK0
DK0
An individual’s baseline coherent state, with accessible regulation and a stable orbit.
DK1
DK1
Coherence arising within a relationship or field involving several people, dependent on each person having access to DK0.
OVS
Open meaning loop
Meaning remains unclear and the system cannot end its defensive readiness; access to DK0 is blocked.
UVS
Closed meaning loop
Resolution of meaning that allows the defensive response to switch off and regulation to return.
VAO
Meaning-triggered defence activation
An autonomic defensive response triggered by unclear meaning rather than a direct threat.
ANS
Autonomic nervous system
The body’s regulatory system for mobilisation and defence, and for recovery and integration.
Vagus
Vagus nerve
A principal regulatory pathway of the parasympathetic system, associated with breath, voice, heart-rate variability and recovery.
