Three ways to learn the jaw harp
Would you rather learn independently or have my full attention? The online course and a live private lesson are two different options.
Short online course
Buy access to the Beginner Programme and learn at home with the videos. We do not need to find a shared appointment — play a lesson whenever you have the time and inclination.
- 7 step-by-step tutorial videos.
- 10 technique demonstrations and 3 interactive trainers.
- Pause and replay the videos whenever you need.
€41 / 30 days of access
One-off payment with no automatic renewal. Live private tuition is not included.
Private video lesson
We meet on camera at an agreed time. I can see how you hold the jaw harp, hear your sound and immediately help with whatever is not working.
- 60 minutes of one-to-one tuition.
- Immediate feedback and time for your questions.
- No travel: all you need is your jaw harp and an internet connection.
Suitable for your first steps or a specific difficulty. You will find current lesson options and prices on the detail page; we will arrange the time together.
In-person lesson
Would you like to meet in person? We can arrange a session and work through your playing together. We can focus on the basics or on where you would like to go next.
- Live demonstrations and playing together.
- Content tailored to your level and interests.
- Venue, duration and date by agreement.
This option requires the most time and has the highest overall cost, particularly because of travel. The price is agreed individually according to the scope and venue.
Not sure which option to choose? Choose the Beginner Programme if you want to start independently. Choose a live lesson if you want me to look directly at your technique. You can combine both later.
Your first sound without forcing it
When you hold a jaw harp for the first time, you do not need to play a melody straight away. Get to know the instrument, find a comfortable grip and try a gentle strike. Aim for a clean, confident sound rather than volume or speed.
- Relax your posture and shoulders. Sit or stand so that you do not have to hold your body under tension.
- Find the correct grip and contact point. This depends on the jaw harp’s design: some rest against the teeth, while others rest against the lips. Hold the frame steadily and leave the tongue room to move freely.
- Begin with a gentle strike. Set the tongue in motion gently. If the sound rattles or the tongue catches, check the instrument’s position instead of adding force.
- Then add tone colour and rhythm. Experiment with mouth shapes like vowel sounds while keeping a simple, steady pulse. Let your breathing remain natural.
Ease matters more than performance. Do not press the jaw harp hard or play through pain. If you are unsure about the grip, let me demonstrate it in the course or during a live lesson.
From first attempts to your own playing
Once you feel more confident with the jaw harp, short and regular practice helps. Begin with a simple rhythm, add changes in tone colour and only then move to more complex combinations. Alternate playing with breaks and pay attention to what you hear.
My approach makes room for music as well as awareness of the body and breath. You do not need any theory to begin. If you are interested in the broader context, read about Dynamic Coherence.
Whether you want to learn a few rhythms for pleasure or eventually play with other people, the foundation remains a comfortable relationship with the instrument and a desire to explore its sound.
Start with your first sound
The simplest route is the Beginner Programme: pay once, activate your access and start at your own pace. If you later want personal guidance, we can follow up with a live lesson.
